In the early 90’s I had the distinct pleasure of meeting and selling a number of iron beds to Whoopi Goldberg. At the time she had just started dating a high profile actor who I’d also sold a number of iron beds to over the years. I’d first sold him an iron bed for his daughter when he was married. Then I sold him another iron bed when he got divorced and moved out and into his own home. He also got another iron bed for his daughter for her when she’d come stay with him.
One summer day he came into the store with Whoopi. She is one of the absolute nicest individuals I’ve ever met. She would later come back and become one of my best customers after she and the actor had gone their separate ways.
When she came back in she asked if I could convert one of our antique iron beds to a larger than usual king size iron bed. I did this and also had a custom size mattress specifically made for the over sized iron bed we’d converted.
Whoopie was very involved with her own interior design, and she was as any professional I’d ever dealt with. After seeing how pleased she was with the iron bed we’d converted for her and her new husband Lyle Trachtenberg. We ended up putting iron beds in every bedroom in the house. She loved them. Whenever she was shopping on Montana Ave. near my store, she’d stop in to say hello.
