What Sizes Did Antique Beds Come In?

What sizes did antique beds come in ? Back in the 1800’s there were only three size beds being used…….Twin’s, which  could vary in width sometimes as much as 5″, then there were 3/4 size, that were right around 48″ in width and last but certainly not least was the double/full size at 53′ to 54″ in width and is still the same size being made today. Queen……nope. King……….nope. The biggest size was double size up until the  late late 1800’s and possible not until the early 1900’s, when queens and kings started being made. 90% of all the iron beds being made were double/full size. Double size beds forced the couple to snuggle for warmth. Which back in those times was a real issue. There was not central heating. At best there were cast iron pot belly stoves that could be filled at night with either coal or wood , and the keep the home warm until morning. Metal beds were always shared by siblings. Much of the time a twin iron bed would have numerous children sleeping width wise in the bed until their feet were hanging over and  then it was time for them to get there own bed.
