Many years ago I had a group of you girls buy a bed from me for a sorority sister who was getting married.
The idea for such a gift had come from one of their grandmothers who had quilted a beautiful “double wedding ring” quilt for the bride. She had recounted, to her granddaughter how, when she was a bide, their friends had all pooled their money and bought her and her husband a “wedding ring” style. There was very little money for furniture in the new couples home and the iron bed was a very welcome gift. Actually a gift that the grandmother had handed down to her granddaughter.
The granddaughter , having loved the whole idea of starting a new chapter in your life when you get married, presented the idea to her sorority sisters, who all endorsed her suggestion.
It just so happens that I happen to have had a beautiful “wedding ring” bed in my inventory at the time. This was the only one they were interested in. We refinished it in a beautiful antique distressed white finish with gold guilding on the castings.
I delivered it to the reception hall where the wedding party was going to be held. I set it up and took the beautiful “double wedding ring ” quilt, the grandmother had quilted on it. It was quite impressive. Although I didn’t stick around to see the new couples reaction. The sorority house sent me a beautiful Thank You card and a box of cookies.
Since that wedding present, I’ve sold dozens of iron beds as wedding presents. Think about it…….. starting a new chapter in your life with someone. What better way than with a new….old….antique iron bed.
The photo in this blog is of an antique “double wedding ring” quilt that I once had in my collection of quilts. The “wedding ring” is also one of many iron beds I’ve had over the years.
