This photo is of a thin gauge iron bed I converted to a canopy and a modern king size. It has always been my policy to not offer thin gauge beds for king conversion because of the amount of “flex” a thinner gauge rod has, as appose to the thick wall 1″ tubing…..which has not flex.
When a bed has a thin 3/8″ rod going across the top, it has a natural degree of flex to it that if made wider to a king size, will exacerbate that degree of flex when leaning against it watching TV or reading in beds with stacks of pillows.
In this instance the decorator was Kerry Joyce. One of the best decorators I’ve had the pleasure to work with on a number of occasions. He was doing a home for the actress Jamie Gertz, and wanted an iron bed that was a lighter feel and look, yet he wanted it to be a king size with an extended canopy top because of the extremely tall ceilings. Reading in bed or watching TV were not concerns with this bed. It was strictly the look he was going for .
Kerry also wanted a dramatic Black finish with gold accented castings for high contrast against the lighter colored walls and canopy curtains he had made. The overall look, as you can see is quite pretty and brought us more press and continued attention over the years than just about any bed I’ve ever convert to king size.
