As is well documented, the Art Nouveau period was peaking between 1890 and 1905…..well after the popularity of iron beds had been around and flourishing. So how is it a bed that was designed and made in the early 1800’s, had all the distinctive design elements of a period that wouldn’t even come into existence for decades to come? There really is no explanation. Here are two iron beds that are as Art Nouveau in their styling as any piece of furniture made within the Art Nouveau Period……. yet they were both made back in the 1820’s. A real anomaly.
It also was not uncommon to come across beds that had a very distinctive Art Deco and even Modern design to them, that were also made back in the 1800’s. I can only imagine what people back in the 1800’s must have thought of beds that had designs that were so different from any other popular designs of the day. I can only liken it to going to a car show today and viewing a prototype of a car that looks today to be so futuristic, yet in another 3 to 5 years will probably be very common place. I guess there will always be those designers that will design outside the box and way ahead of their time.. Fortunately for us……they are what move the world of design forward into the future.
