Although I’ve written blogs on this topic in the past, I always like revisiting it for the benefit of new parents or young people getting their first place. Storage is almost always an issue. Apartments are usually smaller that what you were use to growing up and there’s never enough space for all your clothes, school books and stuff in general. Cathouse beds are a great solution to many of these storage problems. I must stop here to qualify the type of bed I’m referring to, because not all iron beds have the storage advantage. Only antique iron beds have the 13″ clearance that makes storage a dream. Reproduction iron beds, are made low to the ground and don’t give you that storage advantage.
Whether a Twin, or Full size bed……. the entire under side of the bed can be used for storage. So whatever the dimensions of your mattress, take that with a 13″ thickness and you’ll see exactly the volume you’ll be able to handle. It can be considerable. When we convert our beds to larger sizes, I still have people taking advantage of the space underneath. Some of my customers have had elaborate rolling drawers that roll in and out from under their beds. But remember…… only my “antique beds” give you this kind of clearance.
