For those of you familiar with the store Restoration Hardware, I think we can all agree they do some great looking older vintage finishes. Not really your distressed setting by the barn for the past 200 years finishes, like we do on our iron beds. But some clean old looking finishes that are very rich and tasteful.
Not long ago I had a client who had fallen in love with drawer pulls from Restoration Hardware and wanted the iron bed they’d gotten from me to match. The subtle color variations in the small drawer pull posed a real challenge to try and recreate on an antique iron bed.
My refinisher, who has been doing my iron beds for over 15 years, took it as his personal challenge to come up with a finish that upon close inspection had all those little subtleties. Most of our iron bed finishes are sort of grand authentic antique looking finishes……… not obvious or faux’ looking. But definitely distressed and old looking. That’s how iron beds look when they’ve been exposed to the elements for years on end.
The photo you see here, took as much, if not more, time that any of the other iron bed finishes in our collection, to create and refine. But in so doing we were able to give our customer an iron bed she was extremely happy with. Her interior designer has come back to us for well over a dozen more iron beds since we did this one.
