So you have a king size mattress and you’ve always wanted an antique iron bed. But you know that the largest antique iron bed made was a double size, right? Right…….But did you ever consider calling Cathousebeds .com and seeing what magic they can work with the antique double size iron bed frames to accommodate your modern king size mattress.
As you can see from the photo of the iron bed as a double and after we converted it, that we strive to maintain the symmetry of the original design by only adding what we feel would have been intended, had the foundry offered a king size back in the 1800’s. Maintaining the flow and design of the original iron bed is no easy task. The tubing that is added has to have the subtle curves so as to blend in with the original design. The welds need to be seamless so as not to see the transition or section that has been added. And whatever is added can’t be some new odd portion that doesn’t blend or look appropriate. I’ve had customers buy beautiful iron beds from me and then want to have me add some crazy looking design they think will enhance the look of the bed. What a person needs to know is this………Choosing an iron bed is much like choosing a life partner. You should go into the relationship being happy with the person…..not wanting to change them….that can be a formula for a failed relationship or marriage. If there’s something you don’t like about them…..keep looking. There’s someone out there for you that you won’t want to change. OK…..back to iron beds…..So choose an iron bed that you love. Not one you want to alter or change the look and feel of. Achieving a king size doesn’t have to change the style or flow of the design.
We also take molds of the original castings on the double size iron bed. So when we need to add additional verticals or scrolls, those rods will be held in place with the same castings that are already on the bed. Few people have the technical ability to go to this extent in trying to achieve the best conversion possible.
