Back in the early 1800’s the more affluent people in this country sought out the beauty of shinny brass beds. So to help crack that large market share, the small independently owned foundries that produced iron beds, decided to offer a “touch of brass” on the beds they were producing, just to try and pull in some of those people who liked the more expensive brass beds. Some iron bed foundries refused to use brass and choose to manufacture metal beds with more curves, scrolling and detailed castings. Some of the most ornate beds I’ve ever seen, are ones that had not brass at all in their design.
