How many of you are old enough to remember Grandmas sleeping porch and the old antique iron beds she had on them? Well if you get into certain areas of the east, you’ll still see iron beds that haven’t moved an inch off those porches in the past 150 years.
Sleeping porches provided a couple of very necessary things to the owner of the house. First….. It gave an additional bedroom for guest to stay in. Second……In the summer time way before air-conditioning was invented, it gave the owners of the house a cool place to sleep in those hot sticky night. The iron bed elevated the occupant up to the level that they were able to get the soft summer breezes that the porch and its vast amount of windows allowed in. As I said, these beds were very popular on “sleeping porches” because of being able to elevate the mattress.
Some people would only have their beds set up on the Porch during the hot summers. They would then disassemble them and store them until they were needed again. Some people, being use to their everyday bed, would actually have it disassembled and used on their “Sleeping Porch”.
Many people wouldn’t sleep in anything other than their own bed.
