It’s always nice when we come across a previously unseen photo of an bed we provided for a movie. Thank you to my customer for forwarding this photo of the bed we did for the movie “The Holiday” with Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jude Law and Jack Black. I actually had a close up of Cameron in the bed before. So I was very pleased to see a long range full shot of it in the bedroom.
As is the case with many interiors and exterior shots……. they really are processed shots of exterior facades, which is the case with the country cottage this bed was suppose to have been in. All the interior shots were on a sound stage and the exterior’s were a facade of a country cottage that was built for the movie.
I was actually surprised when I saw the interior of the country cottage that they selected the one that they did. It would seem that a true country cottage with some distressed furniture pieces would have been served better with a bed that had some aging to it’s finish. Even if it were just a small amount of distressing or chipping. As the bed appears in these photo’s it would seem as though they just had it refinished for the movie. The exterior shots of the cottage give a very weathered old cottage in the English countryside. Many of the interior shots are a much more weathered look…very quaint. So it seemed a little incongruous that the bedroom and bed would be so perfectly refinished and new looking. I’ve always been a stickler for authenticity and the original old “look” a bed should have in a movie. Especially if it is going into a scene that has a period aged look to begin with.
I’m always pleased when set decorators use our iron beds in their movies and TV productions. So I don’t want to sound overly critical of the finish or bed selection they made. The majority of set decorators using our antique iron beds in their productions are as much, if not more so, sticklers on wanting the finish and style they’re using to be perfect for the setting and period.
Our beds are a great way to impart a particular feel or age to a scene. They even can set a certain socioeconomic look and feel to a scene. That’s why most set decorators are quite particular on their selection.
