Occasionally I’ll get a person who loves antique iron beds, but doesn’t want an antique finish. There are many people that want a new modern clean look, almost industrial in nature. As I’ve mentioned many times, the beauty of a metal bed is in the castings the foundry designed back in the 1800’s and the style of beds they pour those castings on. Much of the time when I get iron beds in that haven’t been sandblasted and have 150 to 200 years worth of paint, it’s near impossible to see all the detailing the castings have. Sometimes there are things in the castings of these beds that aren’t visible until they are sandblasted down to the bare iron.
That’s how we came about the Sandblasted Pewter finish for our beds. By sandblasting all the paint off and exposing the bare iron, many people wanted to keep that fresh clean look on their 200 year old iron . So we spray on a clear finish that has no pigment and simply seals the metal so it won’t rust. Beds that aren’t sprayed after being sandblasted clear, will almost immediately start to rust. Once that starts…..it’s almost impossible to inhibit further rust.
Many of the finishes we do mimic a rust appearance. That’s done with umber acrylics.
The Sandblasted Pewter finish will give your bed a more clean industrial look. For a modern setting , it’s perfect.
