The Bono Sand finish is one of the more popular finishes we offer on our iron beds. It’s a lighter finish that goes beautifully with “off white” walls or adobe sand finishes. Most of the beds I sold to designers and people in the Santa Fe area have all been refinished in this southwestern style finish.
The finish came about and was named after one of my customers who had asked us to do a custom finish on the bed they had gotten from us. The finish was so pretty, we started offering it to other customers we had come in.
As I mentioned in a previous blog, Joe and Jennifer Montana were very got customers and had gotten a number of really top notice beds from me over the years. I had also mentioned that a number of Joes team mates had also gotten beds from me after he initially did.
The one I got a kick out of more than any of the others was with his “back-up” quarter back Steve Bono. It seems Steve had been to a party at Joe’s house and was given the grand tour. Upon seeing the bed we had converted to king size for Joe & Jennifer, something was said that must have stuck in Steves head. When he called, it was with a certain urgency that we find him a bed as good as, if not better than, the one his team mate had gotten from us. Which we did. A Partial photo of that bed is in this photo. I use it to this day to show an example of the custom finish we did for Steve. He had wanted a lighter finish with distressed brass and an old rubbed off painted look. He was a very nice person to work with and was very intelligent when asking questions and understanding all the ins and out’s of beds. For me as a dealer , it’s always nice when a customer shows more than a passing interest in the bed they’ve selected. Some people just want the look. Others want to know everything there is to know about them , and for them I think there is much more appreciation for the character old antique iron beds bring to the table. Steve was one of those interested parties, I wish I had more of.
He got a great bed from me. It was also a bed I’ve never had again since then. Making it one of the more collectible ones we’ve been fortunate enough to have uncovered over the years.
Steve has since retired from football, having a long and distinguished career with the Minnesota Vikings, Pittsburgh Steelers, San Francisco 49er’s, Kansas City Chiefs, Green Bay Packers, St. Louis Rams and finally the Carolina Panthers. He now works as an investment adviser for a firm in California. An avid golfer, Bono held an annual golf event in the San Francisco area benefiting the National Kidney Foundation. Bono also played in the 1993 Pebble Beach National Pro-Am golf tournament, one of the most prestigious pro-am events in the United States.
Our thanks go out to Steve and his family for their patronage. I hope they’re as happy with the beautiful bed we did for them as we were.
