The majority of the antique iron beds that were being made back in the early to mid 1800’s were Victorian style designs with beautiful open scrolls and smooth curved lines. So to come across a unique style bed that was made at the same time, but looked as though it was a bed that had been made in possibly the late 1900’s is a real oddity. But the following bed was one of those very unique “geometric” designs that looked like a modern interpretation of an old bed.
I have actually had other iron beds that had some of the same castings this bed has on it, but that they were very scrolled Victorian designs that fit with the times. It leaves me to believe that a forward thinking foundry , liked offering something that wasn’t necessarily mainstream………. but had a definite market.
Some of these geometric style metal beds that were being made in the early to mid-1800’s are extremely collectible because of their rarity. Having been in the bed business for more than 30 years, and having seen and sold thousands , it’s more and more rare that I come across antique iron beds that I haven’t seen before.
