There are very few things that you can do to an iron bed that will make it look more impressive than a canopy conversion.
Even the simplest bed can take on a whole new personality with a tall canopy and billowy flouncy curtains.
Is a canopy conversion a difficult thing ? Yes and no. If we’re doing it…… no……..it’s something we do nearly every day. We use old castings and take molds from them so we’re able to pour new castings around the welded joints of the added tubing to create the canopy poles.
For some very odd reason, we never made canopies on our beds in this country, like they did in Europe, back in the 1800’s. I’ve never really been able to come up with a practical reason why. Canopies in Europe were to help with two things……..warmth: with the use of a chamber pot and the body heat of the occupants, a thick material canopy top and sides could help hold in the heat and maintain a comfortable temperature, even when it was quite cold in a draft bedroom.
Some times it’s even easier, if you don’t want to go to the trouble of finding someone who knows how to do all the welding and foundry work necessary to convert your bed to a canopy, to just go ahead and fashion a “Free Floating” canopy that isn’t even attached to the bed. Here are a few examples.
Remember…… All iron beds look better and more impressive with a canopy. Whether they’re twin, double , queen or king
