Many people come to me with 3/4 size iron beds and want to know where they can have custom size mattresses made for them. First of all…… any mattress company will either make you a regular 3/4 size mattress or already have one that is readily available to buy. 3/4 size beds are not uncommon at all.
The photo you’re looking at is a 3/4 size bed set in front of a regular double size bed. See the little width difference on both sides. Here is what we do with the majority of our 3/4 size beds……put regular double size mattresses on them. The mattress sets on top of the siderails……..not inside them.

Once antique iron beds are dressed properly with a dust ruffle and quilt or bedspread, the slight width difference is minimized and isn’t even noticeable. That way you can get regular double size sheets for your bed and still accommodate a double size mattress.
3/4 size beds were very popular back in the early 1800’s because of the room sizes. Normally metal beds came in Twin and Full/Double sizes. the 3/4 size bed was a good size to accommodate one larger person comfortably or two smaller children more comfortably than a twin size bed.
