There are few castings , seen on antique iron beds, which have a definitive meaning as that of the “Cornucopia”. It is rich in meaning dating back to medieval times.
The dictionary describes a “cornucopia” as a goats horn that is overflowing with abundance. That abundance is symbolized with fresh flowers, fruits and corn.
Another term for the “cornucopia” is “horn of plenty”. Once again referring to the goats horn and an array of “plenty”.
Although the cornucopia was seen more on holiday tables like Christmas, New Years Day, and Thanksgiving, it was also seen in a wide number of furniture designs…….iron beds being but one of the many employing the age old symbol of abundance and prosperity.
In Victorian times the “Horn of Plenty” or ” Cornucopia” also symbolized spiritual wealth and abundance and awareness. So it stands to reason in Victorian times when the population i this country were just starting to expand and discover it’s new world, that things like the Cornucopia be a symbol of the “positive” nature of the population.
