I am constantly getting requests from people looking for matching twin size iron beds. As you may know from reading some of my other blog’s, twins were not made in the same quantities as double sizes were. The reasons were varied…….but that’s another whole story. Suffice to say, over the past 40 to 50 years that antique iron beds have been collected and have risen to the height of popularity they now occupy, their numbers have dwindle down to near extinction.
So what is the alternative for those people really wanting an original old twin bed, and possible a matching pair………Well because doubles were made in much larger numbers than twins. So the selection of doubles is far greater than twins. We even happen to have more matching double size beds than matching twins.
We have taken to cutting down the doubles to Twin widths. As in the attached photo, we took two doubles and cut them down to twin width and then converted them both to canopies.
When beds were originally being produced by all the small independent foundries that made them……those foundries always offered their different styles in double, twin and occasionally 3/4 size. So when we cut the doubles down, we are simply offering the same bed in the same cut down version they were originally offered in.
So if you’re looking for just one twin size frame or a matching set…….consider cutting down a double. Your selection will be far greater and you’ll probably be much happier in the end.
