In 1971 I was going to GW in Washington DC, when the Disney movie Bednobs and Broomsticks came out. I had just start dealing in brass beds and iron beds.
I can distinctly remember the day the movie was released. I started getting calls from people looking for brass beds. I wasn’t aware of it, because I was slightly older than the Disney movie going crowd, but mothers that had been taking their children to see it really keyed into the brass bed that was prominently featured throughout it. I actually sold out of all the brass beds I had that week. Fortunately I had a beautiful selection of old antique iron beds. When my customers realised I was out of brass beds, they started buying the more attractive metal beds.
So it was actually a brass bed that jump started my metal bed business. After I started selling these beds at a pretty go clip, brass beds all but dried up. It became increasingly more and more difficult to find them and at the time finding metal beds was quite easy. Wish I could still say that now. Unfortunately beautiful old scrolled metal beds are now going the same rout brass beds did when they started to dry up. If they run out at the same rate brass beds did, metal beds have possibly another 2 to 3 years…..tops. Oh they’ll still be around. But the prices, because of their scarcity, will quite prohibited.
So if you’ve ever thought of getting a bed like this. Waiting is going to be a big mistake. When I try and tell people this, they think I have my “used car salesman” hat on. But buying an metal bed even six months down the road, is going to cost you more money…..possibly hundreds more.
Wherever you end up getting your metal bed……..get it ow.
