Although the Art Deco school of design first appeared in France during the 1920s and flourished internationally during the 30s and 40s, metal beds of the early and mid 1800’s, were already displaying Art Deco styling way before they would become popular. It’s difficult to imagine what the designers of iron beds were thinking to design such frames that must have seemed like a step out of time………or should I say way before their time. Here are a number of styles and designs that all came from foundries in the mid1800’s………some close to 50 years before the term “Art Deco” would even come into existence.
