Back in the early to late 1800’s the double/ full size was the largest bed being made. Consider this…..people were much shorter on an average and the longer queen and king sizes didn’t start being made until the early 1900’s. The other popular sizes inthe 1800’s were the Twin size and 3/4 size which is in between the Twin and the double. A very disproportionate amount of Twins and 3/4’s were made in comparison to the more popular Double / Full size. Another reason for smaller size iron beds was an issue of warmth. Back then two and three people would sleep together for the sake of warmth. I’ve actually seen old Daguerreo Type tin photo’s of three and four people in one double size bed.
