When we think of log cabins and the appropriate decor for them we usually think more Austere and spartan. Although that is probably what most people that built these rugged homes used in them. As time went on and the west was opened up with the railroad, fancier furnishings became more common place.
Iron beds were one of the many items that were furnishings used in log homes once our populations move west got under way.
I’ve seen photo’s of iron beds that were far more fancy and elaborate than you’d expect to be in a rustic log home environment. So if you’re considering a metal bed for your log cabin or lodge…… you pretty much have a free rein on what will look good and appropriate.
As is the case with all log home interior design, you should consider earth tones and an warm colors. Bright neon’s or primary colors really have no place in a beautiful old rustic home. If that’s where your taste lays, you’ve made a mistake on the style of home you’ve purchased.
One of the things that does make a more elaborate bed look appropriate is the “finish” you select. Here again you should consider darker earth tones that you’d see in nature. Old iron pieces that were used back in the 1800’s are perfect examples of the look you should go for. White crackle “Shabby Chic” finishes are going to look out of place. There are some lighter rust tone finishes that will blend with your wood interior. Those can have sandy whites that are washed with raw umber acrylics. This look, as you can see from the photo of our “Rusty Iron” finish, blends beautifully with a rustic wood interior.
The other photo is of a more elaborate Victorian bed that was refinished with an old iron finish. As you can see, it blends beautifully with the log interior.
Thinking outside the box when decorating a log home is totally fine……but try and keep “earth tones” in mind.
