99% of the queen conversions we do on our iron beds here at Cathouse are simple length conversions. As you may have read in a previous blog, the width difference between the antique double size bed, which was the largest size they made back in the 1800’s, and today’s modern queen, is only a couple inches on both sides. So we only need to account for the 5″ additional length of a double bed and the modern queen. Antique iron beds were 54″ wide and 75″ long. A modern queen mattress is 60″ wide by 80″ long. Once an appropriate dust ruffle is made, I’ll be doing a blog on that very soon, the quilt and dust ruffle will hide the negligible width difference.
But in some rare instances a client will ask us to do a width conversion to their bed , as the one you see in this blog photo. This particular bed really lent itself to being made wider with minimal alterations. As you can see, although we added slightly curved tubing to the original design, we were able to maintain it’s symmetry. Now you have an bed that started as a double and has ended up a queen.
