In the forty some years I’ve been buying and selling antique iron beds, I’ve never come across a bed like this with “mermaids” and a “crown” . There is also a beautifully detailed Victorian woman’s face and the “crown” sets above her head.
In researching where this bed came from and it’s background, I learned that the coat of arms and the cities insignia for Warszawa, Poland is a mermaid with a “crown”. Take a look at the insignia and the a close-up of the castings on the bed. Very very similar.
This is a twin size bed that came in from Europe. The woman’s face in the middle are definitely Victorian in nature because of her hair fashion.
Metal beds are not a common place to display mermaids. Try as I have, these are the only ones I’ve come across. I’ve actually had beds with fish castings on them. But never mermaids before.
Because of the manner in which the insignia is displayed on this twin size bed. I have to believe it was representative of possibly the City of Warszawa.
Anyone out there with an bed with mermaids on it………I’d love to hear from you.
