If you’re searching for an antique iron bed and you’ve found one you like…….be sure it has a set of siderails. Now…… be sure and check to see that they fit…..perfectly. DO NOT take the dealers word for it. Have him set the iron bed up with the rails and make sure it doesn’t wobble or shake unusually so.
If they look like they’ll fit and he doesn’t want to set it up……walk away…fast. That means he’s lazy or he knows they won’t fit properly. If you have a beautiful iron bed with a pair of rails that don’t fit right…….you’ve pretty much got nothing. You can’t attach it to a modern frame. That won’t work And the variety of different iron bed manufacturers that made beds was so large, finding a pair that would fit your bed would have the odds of you winning the lottery.
Each iron bed foundry had their own side rail molds, and they were all different, to some degree. Some times not enough to be noticeable to the naked eye. Yet different enough so your iron bed wouldn’t set up properly.
I literally get calls every week from people who have lost their side rails or a moving company lost them or broke them while disassembling their bed. They’re all looking to get a new pair for their beautiful iron bed…… which is now worthless without them.
Take a look at the photo I’ve attached to this blog. This is just the tip of the iceberg, when it comes to the different iron bed side rails.
So whatever you do……hang on to your iron beds side rails like they were gold.
